Im A Neurologist And These Are The Two McDonalds Menu Items That Can Help Banish Migraines

A long-rumoured migraine cure hack involving a specific McDonald’s combination  has now been explained – and, to an extent, approved – by a neurologist.

Chronic migraine sufferers may have heard whispers about how a Macca’s large fries and large coke seem to ease severe migraine symptoms.

Colloquially, it’s even known as ‘the McMigraine combo’.

Now, an American neurologist has weighed in to explain why this unlikely fast food order might speed up migraine recovery.

Dr Jessica Lowe, a board-certified neurologist and epilepsy specialist, said this food hack is ‘relatively well known in the migraine community’ – and for good reason, as there’s actual science behind it.

‘The order is a large coke and large fries. And this somehow miraculously makes migraine go away. This can be easily explained,’ she said in a recent online

The neurologist, who is widely known on social media for her Doctor Brain Barbie Instagram and TikTok accounts, detailed why the nutrient components of the combination have this migraine-relieving effect.

‘First of all, a large coke from McDonald’s has about 80 milligrams of caffeine in it,’ she explained. ‘That right there is probably enough to stop your migraine in its tracks.’

She continued that adding salty Macca’s fries introduces another chemical reaction. ‘McDonald’s is well known to have some of the saltiest fries around. Salt (equals) electrolytes. Easy,’ Dr Lowe explained.

‘And then of course, fries are carbohydrates,’ she continued. ‘A lot of people have migraines that are provoked by hunger or just their glucose starting to drop.’

‘Those carbs are certainly going to help out in that department,’ she added. ‘So, that’s the McDonald’s migraine hack explained by a neurologist.’

While Dr Lowe’s explanation offers scientific justification for this migraine hack, she also offered a note of caution.

She explained that while the large coke and large fries combination makes sense from a chemical perspective, as a doctor she would suggest there are other ways to achieve the same result – without resorting to fast food.

‘Are there healthier ways to accomplish this? Yes,’ she stated in the video shared to her

account, which has been viewed over 8.7 million times.

She then detailed one alternative for achieving this outcome: taking a caffeine-rich migraine relief medication alongside an electrolyte drink, such as Gatorade.

‘Then, it’s not hard to find a carbohydrate that’s healthier than deep-fried potatoes. So go for gold,’ she explained.

However, as a chronic migraine sufferer herself, Dr Lowe acknowledges there are also reasons beyond science why this McDonald’s combo might appeal when you’re feeling unwell.

‘We are all human – and when you are feeling unwell, sometimes you just want some comfort food. I get it. Not knocking the hack,’ she said.

‘Just don’t make a habit of it, because as we know, fast food and deep-fried food is unhealthy (and associated with) increased risk of heart attack and stroke. You guys know the spiel.’

According to McDonald’s Australia nutritional information, a large size Coca-Cola contains 380 calories, 100g total sugars, 20mg potassium and 95mg sodium.

It doesn’t list how much caffeine the drink contains, but generally fountain Coke has around 10mg of caffeine per 100ml. With a large coke in Australia being over 500ml, this would equate to over 50mg of caffeine per beverage.

McDonald’s Australia large fries contain 389 calories, 373mg sodium, 43.3g carbohydrates, 20.5g total fat and 6.1g protein.

Dr Lowe’s viral

has amassed thousands of comments, with the vast majority of responses coming from people who felt vindicated by a medical expert explaining why the hack works as a migraine alleviator.

One person said she would revert to ‘a McMigraine combo once in a while’ to ease a strong headache, while several others agreed it always did the trick.

Although Dr Lowe (pictutred) explained the reason behind why the combination of a large coke and large fries may alleviate migraine symptoms, she ultimately recommended that the same checmical outcomes could be achieved without consuming fast food

Similar combinations were also discussed among the replies, with many claiming a bottle of regular coke and a packet of salty crisps were their go-to.

Others were simply thankful Dr Lowe had taken the time to offer medical insight on why the McMigraine combo can be effective.

‘I do get migraines and it’s super cool to understand them better,’ replied one.

‘For all of us migraine sufferers, we applaud any info we can get to help relieve a migraine,’ agreed another.

However, some replies were incredulous about a doctor apparently recommending McDonald’s food.

To this, Dr Lowe herself chimed in: ‘This is a migraine hack described by thousands of migraine patients, which I – as a neurologist – was asked to explain,’ she said. ‘Not recommending McDonald’s, (but) explaining the pathophysiology of a well-known migraine hack and suggesting alternatives.’

But the most humorous response to the video came from one person who cheekily replied: ‘Oh no, I think I feel a migraine coming on.’
