TV obsessives might be on tenterhooks about the final episodes of Celebrity Traitors which air later this week, but fashion obsessives only have eyes for host Claudia Winkleman and her brilliant take on autumnal chic.
Claudia’s stylist Sinead McKeefrey has yet again worked her magic creating appropriate Highland looks that have captured the imagination of us all – regardless of whether we’re likely to be actually shooting clays, or just daggers at our fellow commuters.
And that’s mostly because when broken down, unlike a lot of the fashion we see on screen, it’s both elegant and practical. Frankly anyone who can elevate a pair of black leggings like that gets my vote.
From chunky cable knits to pleated skirts, here’s how you can take a leaf out of Claudia’s book and dress stylishly – yet appropriately – for the colder months ahead.
Layers of chic
It’s that time of the year where we start piling on the layers. A cable knit is an autumnal staple that kicks your basic jumper up a notch, but they can be super chunky.
The best way to avoid Michelin man bulk is to opt for a tank version, allowing you to show off the design neatly under your coat, while keeping your silhouette streamlined. Claudia’s Johnstons of Elgin cashmere tank is still on sale for a whopping £596 but chic Parisian brand Eric Bompard has a similar version for £285. Or if you’re looking to inject a pop of colour, Boden’s fir green option (£119) will do just the trick.
In the swing of it
Claudia wears a lot of luxe designer pieces, such as her McQueen wool-blend coat and Chloe herringbone jacket, but there are a smattering of high street gems in the mix too, like this ME+EM coat.
A big of fan of oversized silhouettes, Claudia wears this swing design as a statement cover-up, and the inky, navy blue tone works brilliantly with her signature smudgy eyeliner.
At this price it’s an investment buy, but the textured Italian cotton coat is still in would make for a long-lasting transeasonal staple. £495, meandem.com. Otherwise H&M have a cheaper, slighter shorter version for only £44.99.
Pleats please
Hear pleated skirt and you’re instantly taken back to your dreaded uniform, but Claudia’s looks are far from it and they’re bang on trend for this season.
The two styles she’s worn are from Burberry and Prada, so not your usual school outfitters, and while they could undoubtedly give an evening vibe with heels and a strappy top, pairing them with chunky knitwear and lug sole boots shows their versatility.
So if you’re looking for desk-to-dinner dressing, this is the style for you. Get the Prada look for less with Maje’s similar version for £279 or why not try TU at Sainsbury’s grey checked kilt – only £28 – a true steal.
The gloves she loves
When there’s a chill in the air, there’s nothing worse than having cold hands. But when you’re on the go, constantly taking your gloves on and off isn’t ideal.
Luckily we have the solution. A fan of wristwarmers, Winkleman is spotted wearing them on many occasions, including this cashmere pair from Brora (£65)that have been expertly knitted in Scotland.
Check it out
Filmed on location at Ardross Castle, near Inverness, it’s only right that tartan makes an appearance.
From a bright red pair of Alexander McQueen trousers to a more subtle wool blend suit from Ralph Lauren, Claudia demonstrates how versatile and surprisingly wearable it can be and most definitely just a uniform for those in the Highlands.
Tartan is all over the High Street too, with plenty of options and colours available. My top pick has to be these pleated wool culottes (£159) from Boden. Wear as a statement piece with block colour knits, or if you want to go all out, they have matching loafers to complete your look.
Stick the boot in
If there’s one key item to take from her Traitors wardrobe, it has to be the lug sole boots. Pretty much glued to her feet for most of the series are these Bottega Veneta boots (£1,080). And while you may think a pair of chunky boots should be left for outdoor activites, think again.
A firm favourite in the fashion world, these leather boots have become a wardroble must-have that can even be paired with your floral midi. If you’re after something cheap and cheerful head to H&M (£37.99) or in need of something a little more robust, try Russell and Bromley’s City chelsea boot (£295).
