The few days leading up to 25 December, when you have those special catch-up moments with family and friends, are my favourite part of Christmas. There’s a little magic in the air. And even the grumpiest types are in a jolly mood.

If you’re hosting over the festive period, being hospitable can be utterly exhausting! You have to think of multiple things at once: decorating the table; perfecting the cooking; remembering who drinks what; and figuring out who to seat beside your sister-in-law.

And then, of course, there’s the question of what to wear. Personally, I divide Christmas Day into three parts. A nice PJ set for opening the presents under the tree, followed by a leisurely breakfast. This year I’m wearing a silk green-and-white striped set by Eberjey and, it turns out, I’m in good company. Meghan Markle just wore the brand’s signature Gisele PJs in holiday-appropriate deep red (which I recently featured on this page) on her Netflix Christmas special. She, however, appears to have an ‘M’ monogram embroidered on the pocket – how very Marie Antoinette!

Then it’s time to change into something dressy for champagne, followed by Christmas dinner late afternoon. This year, I think I’ll wear a Genny burgundy silk shirt with velvet trousers. Or I could, depending on my mood, opt for a red dress – I have my eye on the ruched Ezra style by Belgian brand Bernadette. Or a fuss-free black tuxedo suit never fails, paired with some simple gold or silver jewellery. Alex Eagle Studio has a fabulous range.

For Christmas 2025 partywear, key trends include: replacing the usual traditional sequins in gold and silver with statement knitwear in ruby red, deep burgundy and plum; velvet blazers (especially in pine green); jacquard, satin and silk pieces; and a return of early noughties-inspired looks with metallics and shiny fabrics. I was hankering after a great red velvet dress this year, but found it impossible to track one down.

Once dinner is over and everyone is full and content, it’s time for a walk to blow away the cobwebs or collapse on the sofa happy that it all went well. I can’t relax unless I’m in something slouchy with a forgiving waistband. This year it’ll be a cashmere knit, a pair of comfy bottoms and some cashmere socks for the chosen Christmas movie.
