I seem to spend a surprising amount of our family holidays in large supermarkets.
There is something very relaxing about them – the lighting, the quiet music, the absence of my family.
It’s one of the ways you can escape for a few hours while still claiming to be useful. But I never look at the clothes. I lump the supermarkets in with the fast-fashion giants: single-use clothing, 100 per cent polyester.
I’ve always proudly worn the threadbare pieces I’ve owned for years, rather than buying stuff that won’t last a second wash.
But, over half-term, I found myself relaxing in Asda. As I walked through the clothing section, I spotted a white tunic, simple but beautifully cut.
And what shocked me even than the price was the fact it was 100 per cent cotton.
Real fabric, breathable, soft, and it turns out after I splashed a full £22 on it, very wearable.
And it has survived a few washes, already defying my expectations. I’m not the only one becoming charmed by supermarket fashion.
Sales are soaring at Sainsbury’s, Tesco and Asda by up to 3.5 per cent – outperforming much of the High Street. Womenswear is driving the boom, in particular the success of Tesco’s F&F Active and Asda’s Studio Edit At George ranges. And, honestly, I’m not surprised.
The whole High Street is cutting corners these days. Big brands are making clothes out of plastic, adding the tiniest hint of wool, then shouting about it as if it’s luxury – pulling the plastic over our eyes. Yet, most of them charge an absolute fortune for it. What the supermarkets are doing so well right now is offering trend-led pieces that don’t feel entirely disposable – clothes that actually look good, feel good, and come at prices real women can afford – and fashion editors want to wear.
So, I set myself a challenge: to find a winter wardrobe in the supermarkets…
The white shirt
If you want a trendy ‘boyfriend cut’ white shirt then look no further than George at Asda, where you can bag this longline design in cotton for only £25. Meanwhile, these indigo jeans with wide legs look expensive than the £30 price tag.
Christmas party must-haves
This Align-esque waistcoat-and-trouser combo from George is perfect for Christmas party season. The tailoring feels premium than the price tag suggests, and the high-waisted trousers are flattering, sitting at the right point for the open-front waistcoat.
The faux fur jacket
This faux fur toggle jacket from F&F at Tesco is soft and a generous boxy cut, but the argyle tank is the real winner. Oh, as well as the black leather loafers. I’ve been wanting a pair just like this – these are 100 per cent leather and only £32.
Tailored blazers
You can’t go wrong with a tailored check blazer – this one from F&F cinches in at the waist – and black wide leg trousers, in this case a classic ponte fabric and £16. With brown trainers it’s an outfit for work or the weekend.
Designer doubles
If you’ve been lusting after Khaite’s shoulder bag, Tu at Sainsbury’s has a convincing lookalike – and it’s only £24. And Miu Miu’s argyle knits? This diamond-print cardigan from F&F (£27.50) looks far expensive than it is.
Bargain coats
Shearling coats are everywhere. Whistles has a leather version for £1,599 and most High Street faux options still creep past £150. But this double-breasted beauty from F&F? Just £69.50.
Winter dresses
I’m not usually a dress wearer but this check design from Tu is supremely wearable. I love it with the chunky boots – only £32 – and an oversized knit. Very Traitors.
