Japan’s Bestselling Frozen Dumpling Comes to the US

There’s big news in the freezer aisle for Japanese food aficionados and busy home cooks, as Japan’s number one frozen gyoza brand arrives in United States grocery stores this week.

Ajinomoto Foods North America — part of the larger Ajinomoto Group — announced that its frozen Ajinomoto Hane-Style Gyoza will be available nationwide at several major American grocery chains starting October 1.

The Japan-based brand’s popular frozen dumplings were exclusively available in Costco stores for a limited time and received rave reviews from shoppers. (The response shouldn’t be surprising considering that the product is the top-selling frozen gyoza in Japan.) Hane-style gyoza, or Hanetsuki gyozaare distinguished by the crispy, lacy skirt (or “wings”) that forms as the dumplings cook.

Ajinomoto tells Food & Wine that the Costco debut was a runaway success and “made it clear the time was right for these crispy, savory dumplings to make their nationwide launch.”

When the brand’s pork and chicken gyoza first arrived at Costcofans were thrilled, to say the least. One Reddit user proclaimed that the product was “one of, if not the best, frozen gyoza/potstickers I’ve ever had. So glad our store has them in constant supply.”

That’s far from the only positive review these dumplings have received, with another customer observing that the gyoza have “excellent texture and (are) easy to prepare.”

According to a press release, the gyoza will first be released in Walmart and Albertsons stores before expanding to Kroger, Wegmans, and additional grocery chains this fall. “It’s a major leap from being a favorite at select Costcos to becoming widely accessible at everyday grocery stores,” the brand notes.

President and CEO of Ajinomoto Foods North America, Hiroshi Kaho, emphasizes in the press release that “Our hane-style gyoza is more than just a frozen dumpling — it’s a beloved Japanese culinary experience, known for its signature crispy ‘wing’ and unforgettable flavor.”

He explains that by bringing this product to American grocery stores, “We’re inviting consumers to share in the joy that has captivated Japan.”

Ajinomoto Group is a multinational food giant that sells a diverse array of products, ranging from frozen foods to seasonings and sweeteners, as well as many non-edible products in the biotech industry.

The company aims to introduce American customers to the popular dumplings “in the most authentic way possible” and will host a series of gyoza tastings at select stores across the country, including locations in Dallas, Denver, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Boston, starting on October 23.

Ajinomoto confirms that the gyoza will be available in two flavors — pork or chicken — and the filling includes cabbage, garlic, and onions. Priced at $8 for each 10.7-ounce bag, the brand hopes to deliver “restaurant-quality flavor right from the freezer.”
