Binging With Babish Rates Every Kirkland Item at Costco

  • Andrew Rea, better known as Binging with Babish on YouTube, has tried and rated more than 40 Kirkland Signature products at Costco.
  • The cookbook author and creator finds several premium items, including groceries and spirits, that deliver incredible quality at affordable prices.
  • Rea only rates one product as a two out of 10, the lowest score he doles out, and doesn’t give any products a rating of one.

Andrew Rea — who you probably know as Babish — is committed to the bit.

With more than 10 million subscribers on his YouTube channel, Binging with Babishthe creator first built a name for himself by recreating famous dishes from movies and TV shows, from SpongeBob’s Krabby Patty to the ratatouille from Ratatouille, with a painstaking attention to detail.

The cookbook author and self-taught chef has expanded his videos to cover topics like ranking the best slices of pizza in New York City or the best way to cook every type of steak. Throughout all these fairly arduous undertakings, there’s one consistent thread: Rea approaches every task with an extreme commitment to thoroughness and accuracy.

It’s no surprise that when the creator endeavored to review Costco products earlier this year, he didn’t just dabble in a few of them. Instead, Rea tried every Kirkland Signature product he could get his hands on — more than 40 of them — and reviewed each one so you know exactly what (and what not) to buy at the bulk retailer.

Meat is the main reason to go to Costco

While he’s not ranking Kirkland Signature products directly against each other, Rea does assign each food and drink item he tries a rating from one to 10. The content creator enjoys a large number of the bites he samples, but only two Kirkland Signature items earn a perfect score of 10, and one of them is from the food court.

If you’re hitting up the Costco food court, Rea recommends going classic and choosing the signature $1.50 hot dog. In addition to its consistently low price, he notes that it’s actually a good hot dog, saying, “It’s just the biggest, meatiest hot dog in the entire world. This could be smaller, and people would still love it…. The hot dog flavor is second to none. It’s super smoky. It’s really juicy.”

Babish’s only other perfect rating went to another beef product at Costco — or rather, several of them — specifically the selection of high-quality steaks in the meat department. The bulk retailer is well-known as a place where you can save money on beefand Rea confirms that the ingredients you’re getting are exceptional pieces of meat.

Rea emphasizes that Costco “had a selection of some of the most beautiful prime New York strips, rib eyes, and these unbelievable boneless short ribs that were making my mouth water just looking at them. And you can see it’s prime beef.”

He bought a pack of four prime New York strip steaks for about $100, or $25 each. This might seem like a steep price, but as Babish points out, you’d likely be paying around $85 or $90 for the same thing at a steakhouse, and even getting access to prime beef is difficult for many home cooks.

If you need any extra reassurance, after cooking a steak himself, Rea declares that “It’s just straight fire…. I see God in this steak. It’s one of the better steaks I’ve made.”

Score a great deal on Cognac at Costco

You may have considered Costco as a good choice for buying affordable bottles of weeknight wine or spirits in bulk before hosting a party, but have you ever tried its premium Cognac? It’s the “XO” part of the Kirkland Signature XO Cognac that makes this spirit an especially great value.

This acronym means ‘extra old,” signifying that the youngest eau-de-vie in the Cognac has been aged in oak barrels for at least 10 years, resulting in a more complex flavor. It will likely also be more expensive — unless you shop at Costco.

Fast Facts: Kirkland Signature XO Cognac

Age: The youngest eau-de-vie is 12 to 18 years old
Origin: Product of France, controlled cognac appellation
Size: 750 milliliters
ABV: 40%
Flavor profile: Full-bodied with aromas of oak, vanilla, and dried fruit. Notes of honey, chocolate, and almond on the palate, with a smooth finish.

As someone who loves Cognac and has invested in high-end bottles himself, Babish gives it a resounding endorsement. The creator rates this Costco product as a nine out of 10, noting that it has “that just-right balance of sweetness to alcohol to toffee to leather and cigar smoke and just everything that makes Cognac wonderful. It’s really fantastic. I would have gleefully paid three times as much for this. I would have paid $150 for this quality of Cognac. And you usually do for XO Cognac.”

Most Kirkland Signature products are worth their price

Two other groceries earn a near-perfect score of nine from Babish: the Kirkland Signature Krinkle Cut Kettle Chipswhich he emphasizes are “some of the best kettle chips there are,” and a hidden Costco gem, the Kirkland Signature Wild Caught Chilean Sea Bass.

These frozen filets are individually wrapped, so you can defrost as many as you need at a time, and Rea proclaims that “I’m going to eat every single one of those fillets. I love Chilean sea bass. Can’t find anything wrong with it.”

If these top performers aren’t calling your name, Babish gives sevens and eights to a bevy of Kirkland Signature items, including the rotisserie chicken, maple syrup, bakery chocolate chunk cookies, olive oil, roasted peanuts, and Gouda.

If you’ve been considering trying the Kirkland Signature Burnt Endsyou might want to skip adding them to your cart. This is the only item Rea rates a two, and he says they are simultaneously “not burnt ends” and “the worst brisket I’ve ever had.”

Don’t worry, the cookbook author and newly minted Kirkland reviewer doesn’t assign a rating of one to any products, confirming that Costco deserves all the love we give it.
