Love them or loathe them, skinny jeans are officially back. After years when baggy styles have been the norm, the fashion world – and the high street – is making a return to figure-hugging silhouettes.

The look was at its height in the early 2000s, led by the likes of Kate Mosswho paired jeans with everything from evening-wear tops to T-shirts and leather jackets. In her wake were stars such as Jennifer Lopez, Beyonce and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Soon enough, everyone had a pair in their closet. At the peak in 2010, Topshop was selling a pair of ultra-high-rise skinny Joni jeans every ten seconds at its former flagship store on Oxford Street.

Slowly but surely the fashion cycle turned away from the style… and by the beginning of this decade they had all but disappeared when twentysomethings declared bigger was better.

Appropriately enough, though, it’s Kate’s model daughter Purple Moss who is helping to bring about the resurgence of skinny jeans.

Stylist Lisa Talbot says: ‘After several seasons dominated by wide-leg, straight and relaxed denim, designers and high-street brands are once again embracing a slimmer silhouette.

‘Fashion is cyclical, and after years of oversized shapes, we’re seeing a shift back towards streamlined dressing.

‘Skinny jeans also offer something many women crave: ease. They’re practical, flattering when styled well, and work seamlessly with boots, trainers and smarter outerwear.’

Six skinny jeans styles to snap up this season…

If you don’t quite have the same figure you did back in the first skinny jeans high, there’s no need to fret, says Talbot.

‘The key to wearing skinny jeans in midlife is balance,’ she adds. ‘The biggest mistake women make with skinny jeans is styling them the way we did in the early 2000s, with tight tops, short jackets and flimsy footwear.

‘The modern way to wear them is all about balancing the lower half with stronger, structured pieces on top.’

‘Think: A relaxed blazer to add polish and structure, a chunky knit or rollneck to create softness and confidence around the midsection, and slightly longer-length tops that skim rather than cling.’

‘Shoes play a huge role in making skinny jeans feel current: Ankle boots or knee-high boots ground the look beautifully and add sophistication, trainers (especially clean, minimal styles) keep things modern and relaxed.’

‘Avoid overly delicate shoes, which can throw off the proportions,’ the stylist added.

To find the perfect pair, Talbot says: ‘Fit and fabric are everything. Look for: A high-rise waist for support and comfort, stretch denim that holds its shape, and a clean, dark or mid-wash for the most flattering and versatile finish.’

She added: ‘Skinny jeans aren’t about reliving your twenties. When styled with confidence, balance and modern proportions, they can be a sleek, practical and flattering option at any age.’

One need not look further than the Royal Family’s leading ladies for inspiration on how to style skinny jeans as they have all sported a pair over the years, including the Princess of Wales, Queen Camilla and the Duchess of Sussex.

Fashion designer and jean queen Donna Ida Thornton, known for her eponymous denim brand, told the Daily Mail: ‘The royals and particularly the Princess of Wales have always leaned into classics.

‘Skinny jeans are a style staple, and those with a sense of classic style rooted in longevity know this.

‘Particularly for those who have the legs, there is nothing stylish than a skinny high waisted jean tucked into knee high boots.’

Revealing her top tips on how to style the jeans, she added: ‘Either a flat or heeled boot is gorgeous with a skinny jean. They keep you warm, dry, tidy, and stylish in the cooler months, and this is an effortless look for busy women on the go.

‘Add a Wellington boot for the countryside and you are immediately an English countryside icon.’
