I was out last night when The Traitors was on TV and the Whatsapps started flooding in. ‘Stephen’s jumpsuit!!!’ said the first, followed by a flurry of messages about The Traitors contestant and his striking outfit of choice for episode eight (a graphic navy, pale blue and orange jumpsuit, I later discovered). Among those messaging me, some thought the outfit was incredible, others crazy, but undeniably it got people talking. Even one of my editors messaged me saying ‘I want to be able to pull off Stephen’s jumpsuit, but I’m too short!’

Stephen wears a Palomo Spain jumpsuit on The Traitors. The brand is also loved by Harry Styles.

Happily, after speaking to You magazine fashion director Sophie Dearden-Howell, I can assure you there is no such thing as ‘too short’ for a jumpsuit. Nor, she said, is there such thing as too tall, curvy or pear-shaped for one either. It’s just about finding the right fit to flatter you. So, if you want to channel your inner Stephen and pull on a showstopping all-in-one, here are the fashion editor guidelines to follow…

The best jumpsuit for your body shape

Curvy body shape

If you’re curvy with big boobs and/or hips then Dearden-Howell recommends a wide-leg jumpsuit with a cinched waist. ‘You want it to nip in underneath the bust, so that you don’t lose your silhouette,’ she explains. Avoid anything too straight up and down (such as a boilersuit) as it will cling in the wrong places and lose your waistline.

Rounder in the middle

Many people think you need to be tall and willowy to pull off a jumpsuit, but this is not the case. Smart fabric and fit choices are key, however, especially if you’re particularly self-conscious of your stomach. ‘A wrap or tie waist, or some ruching at the stomach give the material natural movement, and provide you with some coverage should you want it,’ says Dearden-Howell. ‘A wide-legged shape and balloon sleeves are also balancing if you tend to carry your weight round your middle’.

Athletic

If you’re less hourglass and straight-up-and-down, then you might want to focus on creating shape rather than balancing it out. ‘A form-fitting jumpsuit with a flare trouser will create shape,’ suggests Dearden-Howell. Basically, look at Stephen’s jumpsuit above, and you get the idea.

Where to shop for jumpsuits…

…if you’re short

Dearden-Howell recommends the petite sections in Karen Millen and Reiss. Whistles does great cropped jumpsuits too.

Available in regular or petite

Shop

…if you’re tall

‘As a tall person, I can tell you Reiss is the best for tall jumpsuits,’ says Dearden-Howell. ‘Peachy Den is also fabulous.’

The jumpsuit mistakes to avoid

  • Make sure the body is long enough. No one wants a jumpsuit riding up the front or back, and it will stop it from gripping your thighs.
  • Avoid the crotch hanging around your knees, or your legs will look stumpy.
  • If you find a jumpsuit you love but feel between sizes – get the size bigger and get your local dry cleaner to take the waist in. It will look so expensive and fabulous and cost you about £20!
  • Do not wear a skinny leg jumpsuit unless you have the body of a supermodel, in which case you go for it, and be very smug!
