In April 2023, when I was 48, I hit rock bottom with my weight. Struggling with perimenopauseI had back pain, high cholesterol and blood tests showed I was pre-diabetic. After months of yo-yo dieting, hundreds of pounds spent on nutritional advice and supplements, and extra time devoted to the gym, I made some progress – but it would get derailed by the juggle of family life (teenage kids and elderly parents) and a busy career as a freelance beauty editor and running my business, The Editor’s List, (editorslist.co.uk), a concierge-style service that directs people to the best cosmetic procedures and practitioners.

Under the care of Dr Wendy Denning (thehealthdoctors.co.uk), I decided to go on Ozempic and over the next nine months I lost 10kg, which drastically improved my health. But there was cosmetic collateral damage: my hair thinned, I lost facial fat and skin elasticity. The silver lining is that, as a beauty editor, I’m in the position to guinea pig cosmetic tweakments – and over the past two years I have road-tested a wide range of machines and injectables. Here’s my opinion on what really works.

The problem: turkey neck

While people talk about Ozempic face, I found slack skin on my neck to be worse after weight loss. I went to nurse practitioner Alexandra Mills (amaesthetics.clinic) to try Revitalis (£250), a new injectable skin booster containing hyaluronic acid and glycerol that helps to smooth crepey skin with a pleasing plumping effect. For the best results you need three sessions paced two to four weeks apart. The effects last about six months.

To tighten and strengthen the delicate skin in the area, I followed this up with a visit to Dr Paris Acharya (drparis.co.uk), who has developed a three-step Nécolleté treatment costing £850.

It starts with NCTF (new cellular treatment factor) mesotherapy: tiny, pretty painless injections of than 50 vitamins and minerals to boost skin health. Next Dr Paris administers a Radiesse ‘wash’ solution made of calcium hydroxylapatite (a mineral found in bone that acts like scaffolding under wrinkly skin), using a cannula to delicately distribute the fluids. As a final flourish, she injected tiny dots of Plinest polynucleotides (highly purified salmon DNA) that work to produce collagen. I had two Nécolleté treatments spaced six weeks apart and despite some initial bruising around my neck, the before and after pictures above speak for themselves: the effects are remarkable and should last up to 18 months.

To keep up the good work at home, I am using Trinny London The Elevator Neck Concentrate (£68, trinnylondon.com) which is one of the best neck-firming products I’ve tried.

The problem: hair loss

My colourist initially pointed out that my ponytail was thinning. Then my daughter told me, as we were travelling up an escalator, that the back of my scalp was showing. Something needed to be done.

Since I started weight-loss medication – I switched to microdosing Mounjaro about a year ago – I’ve tried a few treatments to combat hair loss. PRP (platelet rich plasma), where nutrient-rich plasma is extracted from your own blood and injected into your scalp, was incredibly painful and didn’t help. The Calecim Advanced Hair System (£295, calecimprofessional.com), a six-week at-home kit that contains a powerful stem-cell serum that promises to reactivate dormant hair follicles, didyield results but requires planning – the serum must be applied weekly and worn for 48 hours.

Then I booked in to see Dr Coen Gho (hasci.com), to whom I often refer my male clients for hair thinning. Dr Gho specialises in hair stem-cell transplantation (from £3,500). The Ferrari of hair-loss treatments, it can restore your hair permanently. This procedure is psychologically challenging rather than painful and can take up to eight hours, as it’s meticulous work. The scalp is numbed with local anaesthetic and a large strip-sized donor area is shaved at the back (which can be camouflaged with hair combed over it). The individual hair follicles at the back of the head are extracted using a special needle to splice them, preserving some of the original hair follicle so your hair in the donor area grows back. The harvested grafts are then soaked in a stem-cell solution before being repositioned, with tiny tapestry-like punctures, into the scalp. I had 701 grafts placed around the front of my hairline and temples, then dotted at the back of my scalp.

For a week after the procedure, I had little crusts where Dr Gho had inserted the new hair follicles that became itchy as the new hair started to grow. I am about two months post-procedure now but already see significant sprout. Dr Gho says new hair grows about 1cm per month and will take about nine to 12 months for me to see the full result.

Dr Gho also gave me a minoxidil spray (a gold-standard ingredient for targeting hereditary hair loss), which has been hugely helpful. But now I have run out, I’m ordering Regaine For Women Scalp Foam (£50, boots.com), which contains a potent five per cent minoxidil.

The problem: dull skin

Rapid weight loss can make the complexion lose its glow, so I went to see Dr Glyn Estebanez (drglyn medispa.com) to have the new Skinvive skin booster injections (£750) on the lower half of my face. These contain a runny form of hyaluronic acid (which can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water) and rather than volumising, it gives skin a wonderful dewiness. It’s good for smoker’s lines, can be injected in the lips to give hydration without the duck bill and lasts about nine months.

At home, I have also been using Vol.u.lift (£105, volulift.co.uk), a moisturiser that claims to tackle the effects of Ozempic face. Formulated by a German plastic surgeon, the cream is packed with interesting ingredients including bakuchiol (a gentler retinol alternative) and HA silanol, a new-gen hyaluronic acid. It has delivered an outstanding glow and is one of my favourite skincare discoveries of last year.
