NEED TO KNOW

  • Chelsea Handler partnered with Gold Bond to put its new Plumping Collagen Body & Face Serum Lotion through a “skin torture test” at the Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta
  • Ahead of the stunt, Handler spoke to PEOPLE about her biggest life lessons
  • “When you do take yourself too seriously, (people) can smell that from a mile away,” she says

Chelsea trades landed in Albuquerque at 1 a.m. and woke up for the city’s iconic Balloon Fiesta a mere three hours later — at 4:15 a.m. — to be exact. Despite the total lack of sleep, the comedian is ready to take on her next adventure.

The pep in her step isn’t just because of the energy drink she’s sipping on as PEOPLE chats with her ahead of her biggest stunt yet — it’s Handler’s natural risk-taking spirit.

“This falls into one of those experiences that I would always say ‘yes’ to,” she says of her appearance at the festival, where she’ll put Gold Bond’s Plumping Collagen Body & Face Serum Lotion to the test as she soars over the desert in a hot air balloon.

“I’ve always been a little wild,” she continues. “I like being considered a wild woman.”

“I just like to draw outside of the lines,” Handler adds. “And that’s why I really do dig my partnership with Gold Bond because both of the experiences that I signed up for with them are very representative of the person that I am.”

In March, Handler, took on her first extreme challenge with Gold Bond at the Palisades Tahoe ski resort in Olympic Valley, Calif. In celebration of her 50th birthday, the actress led participants as they skied or snowboarded down the slopes in swimsuits, highlighting the importance of keeping your skin hydrated in cold weather.

In New Mexico, Handler demonstrated the skin-plumping powers of Gold Bond’s latest innovation. Formulated with a blend of three collagen peptides as well as jojoba and grapeseed oils, the Plumping Collagen Body & Face Serum Lotion showed a 50 percent immediate boost in skin hydration in clinical trials.

“I moisturize my whole body, my neck, and my face with the Plumping Collagen Body & Face Serum and it actually plumps your skin,” Handler previously told PEOPLE. “As a 50-year-old woman, I love hearing about skin plumping the natural way so I’m totally down with it.”

In celebration of her latest stunt, and, in the hopes of inspiring more adventurers, Handler shared the five biggest life lessons she’s learned — so far.

Don’t Take Yourself Too Seriously

Handler applies this philosophy to everything in life, including beauty and style.

“I want everything to remain fresh and alive,” she says, “And that comes from your personality. When you do take yourself too seriously, (people) can smell that from a mile away.”

“I understand if you love fashion and I understand if you love makeup and I understand if you love skincare, but you can’t make it your entire identity,” Handler explains. “It is a part of everything. So I don’t ever hyper focus on something in any of those areas.”

Run Toward Fear

From skiing (in a swimsuit!) and taking hot air balloon rides to performing stand-up for packed houses, Handler’s adrenaline-chasing tendencies have gotten her far.

“I look at fear as something that is worth facing,” Handler says. “I kind of run towards fear because I have that type of personality, and I understand that not everybody does.”

“I love when people use that word adventurous because I really am adventurous,” she continues. “But I just want to get all of the experiences. I want to see all the views.”

Embrace the Hustle — But Also Know When to Rest

“I would say the hustle is real and it’s important to have it,” Handler says. “I’ve always had this desire to hustle… I work really hard and I play really hard, and I make sure I get all of the things in that I want. When I need rest, I go and get it.”

Following her hot air balloon stunt, the star plans to “decompress” for a few weeks in preparation for her High and Mighty comedy tour kicking off next year.

“I really just want to be prepared for that mentally and physically because you’re spreading joy and sunshine,” she says. “That’s how I look at it. I want to make sure that I have enough in my tank.”

Prioritize Self-Care

Self-care is always important to Handler, but especially when she’s taking on a demanding tour schedule.

“Sleep is integral to me,” she says of her wellness habits. “Sleep is my only solution. And I work out every day that I’m on the road to keep my energy up because the travel can be kind of hard on your body and your system. So I have a lot of tricks up my sleeve, a lot of electrolytes. I’m not a huge fan of water, so I’m always trying to get my electrolytes in.”

Practice Gratitude

For Handler, “gratitude is the word of the decade.”

“I think it’s really important to remember what is bringing joy into your life and what joy you’re bringing into others,” she says. “And I really do think that impacts your whole vibe and the kind of frequency that you’re operating on. So, I just try to always bring the vibe high. And if I don’t have the vibe high, I try and keep myself at home.”
